In your preparations for class and in the class meeting this week, you learned about the importance of time management and were presented with a number of strategies for managing your time more effectively. That's great, but for that information to actually improve your skills, you need to try out some of those strategies and practice them. Remember, it takes about 3 weeks to develop a new habit and to see changes actually take effect. A good start to applying and practicing time management skills is to keep track of what you actually do in a given day or week.
To this end, your assignment is to use what you learned from your assigned reading and in our class discussion to make a complete record of how you use your time for 48 hours. Looking at that record, what might you do differently to prioritize your studies?
You may use the attached form Download attached form if you like, or you may use your student planner, online calendar, or just a detailed list. If you use the form, use each square to represent one hour in a day and subdivide the squares as you like. As you go through your day, write down what you actually do, not what you think you should do. It's best if you take notes throughout the day so you don't forget the little stuff, like the time you spend brushing your teeth or the 10 minutes walking to class. Finally, everyone needs fun and down time--be sure you include that, too.
To turn in your assignment, answer all of the following questions and upload a copy of your time record (you may blot out things you don't wish to share).
- What surprised you about how you spend your time?
- On what things do you currently spend the greatest amount of time during a typical week?
- How much time do you spend on academic activities (class, tutoring, studying) each day?
- Are you satisfied with how you distribute your time? What can you do that would make you more satisfied? How could you reorder your time to make it more efficient?
This assignment should be completed and turned in through Canvas before noon on Friday, when the university closes for the week. Again, this assignment takes some time, so don't wait until the last minute to do it.
