Test 1 Formula Chart

For Test 1, you need to know (memorize):

  • how to factor quadratics such as difference of squares and trinomials like  LaTeX: x^2+bx+cx2+bx+c
  • how to find the equation of a line using point-slope form of an equation: LaTeX: y-y_1=m(x-x_1)yy1=m(xx1)
  • how to evaluate sin and cos or any other trig function using the unit circle chart (the unit circle will be given to you on the test)
  • how to use the Sandwich Theorem
  • how to find the average rate of change of function LaTeX: f(x)f(x) on LaTeX: [a,b][a,b] by using LaTeX: \frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}f(b)f(a)ba
  • how to find the slope of a tangent line or instantaneous rate of change at LaTeX: x=ax=a by using LaTeX: \lim_{h\longrightarrow0}\frac{f(a+h)-f(a)}{h}limh0f(a+h)f(a)h
  • how to find LaTeX: f^{\prime}(x)f(x) by using LaTeX: f^{\prime}(x)=\lim_{h\longrightarrow0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}f(x)=limh0f(x+h)f(x)h

Study TIPS and test strategies:

  • Schedule your two attempts just in case you should need the second attempt.  Ask the testing center what happens if you cancel your second attempt if you do not need it.
  • Go over each of your powerpoint notes.
  • Complete the test review in MyLab (the test review should adequately prepare you for the test as the test will have very similar questions from the test review; however, try working the test review WITHOUT ANY NOTES or other help so that you are adequately prepared for the test.)
  • If you are needing additional help on specific questions, look for those questions in the Study Plan in MyLab. For example, suppose you need more help on finding the limit of functions defined by graphs from Section 2.2.  Go to MyLab and Mastering, Study Plan tab, Progress, click on Section 2.2, then click on "Find the limit of functions defined by graphs" Practice.  You can try a questions there along with View an Example or Help me Solve this and then try on your own repeatedly by clicking on the forward arrow and then going back to that question so that reloads the questions with different numerical values.  Practice makes perfect!!
  • Get a good night's rest before your test and a good breakfast the morning of. Arrive early and work on your breathing!!
